Cannot play Sims 3 with Origin onMac

★★★ Newbie

I purchased and installed Origin and The Sims 3 Starter Pack for Mac. When I launch the game in Origin, I get this message: “The Sims 3 will be launched with origin. When prompted , enter your product code below.” And the product code is shown. When I pick Play, I get this message: “Launching this game while a download is in progress can negatively impact gameplay. Are you sure you want to continue?”

As far as I know, there is no download in progress, so I click Play Now. Sims 3 launches and a dialog box appears with the message: “A software update is available. Would you like to update your game?” If I click OK, the download and installation process begins and after several minutes, Origin pops back up and Sims 3 displays two dialog boxes. One says “Patching files 3.7.TG13.007445”, the other says “You cannot apply this patch on this version of the application - Please reinstall”

If I do not attempt to install the update The Sims 3 Game Launcher appears. Pressing the Play button, the screen goes black and nothing happens. Eventually, I must Force Quit. The Launcher also gives the option to update the application, but that process also ends with “You cannot apply this patch on this version of the application”.

Any ideas what’s going on here? And/or how to fix it?

@gregoriodiluvio  You don't need to launch TS3 from Origin on a mac.  Just use the alias in Applications\TS3.  But if Origin thinks it's still downloading something, you should be able to take care of that by running the reset tool for macs.

When patching, it's best to use the Super Patch (digital download version), rather than letting the launcher handle the job.  The launcher isn't always thorough, and besides, running the Super Patch on a fully patched game won't hurt.

I'm guessing you only installed the base game, not High-End Loft Stuff or Late Night.  These need to be downloaded separately, once the base game is in place.  Click on the TS3 icon in your Origin game library and select More > Expansion Packs or Stuff Packs, and find each one on its respective list.  Once you install Late Night, you'll need to create an alias for it in Applications, alongside the one for the base game.

If the base game won't launch after you've reset Origin and patched, it's best to do a clean uninstall and start from scratch.  You might have an incomplete or corrupted install, and the best thing to do is wipe it and try again.

Edit:  I've moved this thread to the dedicated Sims/mac section.  Please let us know if you need any more help.
