The Sims World Adventures and Windows 8

I am playing World Adventures updated to 2013 version on Windows 8. Everything is working except the babies. I can adopt one and they are fine, but when a Sim has a baby, he/she appears as a streak of colored lights which cover from one side of the screen to the other. What do I need to do to correct this. This is the second family that has had the problem in this game. I even changed neighborhoods to try again. Same problem.
