Ok, I switched to a wired connection and still nothing. It's starting to look hopeless

After switching to a wire, power cycle everything with the steps I provided previously. If you have a video showing the problem, that might help figure out what's going on.

Just to clarify, what button do you hit to win a faceoff in hybrid controller?

It looks like they are the same as the skill stick controls. I just testing this out and won a faceoff doing the forehand stick lift. To do this you choose a forehand grip and rotate the right stick either 9 - 12 or 3 - 12.

Looks like I'll have to learn that. I was used to just hitting the x button (PS4).

There are numerous videos on YouTube that provide a tutorial on faceoffs. It would be good to start there are there are counters for each grip you need to learn.
