Can't So Anything With the "Use" Key

I'm able to bind any key to "Use," and it's recognized in the Key Bindings screen, and when I play the game, it shows which key I used in the interface, but no matter which key I bind it to, it doesn't work. I've tried multiple keys and even thought that maybe I couldn't pick up some of the guns due to my inventory being limited or something, but now I'm at a place where I have to hold down the use key to pick up a battery, and I'm getting nothing.  I just noticed that my character will pick things up if I open the menu and then close in proximity to the item. I have no idea why, and I am NOT going to go through that every time I have to pick something up.
