I was having problems with playing the sims 3, (it wouldn't launch) so I decided to uninstall it and redownload it. Now, when I try to open it, it tells me "Unknown Error Occurred". Please help?
(I am on a mac with Sierra)

Can you please uninstall the game again, making sure to get rid of ALL residual files. Next, run the Origin reset tool to clear out Origin. Now download just the base game again and install it. After installing it download and run the 1.67 manual super patch (link in my signature below). Now try and launch your game - does it work?

Please read this thread related to the most common cause of the Unknown Error issue - http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-Mac/CURRENT-ISSUE-Unknown-Error-issue-in-Sims-3-in-El-Capitan-Sier...
Some of your Packs may be missing from the installed base game too, even if you have installed them successfully. If so then you need to follow these instructions - https://bluebellflora.com/sims-3-packs-not-showing-as-installed/

Ah, I've seen that video loads of times. My problem: Its th base game that gives me a problem. Unless I have to install my expansions, then I will.

Have you applied the manual patch?
What Mac do you have?
Have you had any Expansion or Stuff packs installed before on the Mac you're using? If so, did you uninstall and delete the residual files completely?

I have an iMac 21.5 inch Late 2013,
No, I don't think I have since I haven't heard of a "patch",
Yes, I have hand expanison packs on the Mac before. I deleted all of them, and I believe I also deleted the residual files.

No, it does not work. It does not give me the unknown error occurred notification, but it shows me a blue screen with a plum bob on it. Other times, it will go past the plumbob, and show a black screen.

Ok. Your problem is exacerbated by the unsupported Intel graphics in your Mac. This thread provides more information on it and help with a workaround - http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-Mac/CURRENT-ISSUE-The-Sims-3-Issues-playing-on-newer-post-2013-Mac...
Although it is interesting that you say you have played on that Mac before. Where you running Sierra then or a previous version of macOS?
August 2017
Yeah, I have played on the Mac before. With Yosemite of course.
Anyway, the graphics still don't work. I still am stuck in the black screen.

Yep, that will be the upgrade to Sierra then. It happened initially with El Capitan too. Have you tried editing the .sgr files by adding your Intel chipset?
