Sims 3 game play problem

Since I have installed Sims 3 Island Paradise I have been experiencing problems with my sim standing around for 3 or 4 minutes real time then going on about whatever told to do every time starting something new she or he stands around for this time but time is not moving on the sim counter, the next thing you know it is 3 hours later on the counter and they have only done a couple of things. I have a PC and it is a downloaded version from origin. Can anyone help?
