For a couple of weeks I have been playing this game without issue. The sound has been working fine on my surround sound speaker set. Earlier this week I did not want to disturb my wife's house guests and I set my computer's default output device to my headphones. The sound in the game worked fine on my headphones. The problem is that now I cannot get the game's sound to come through the speakers again even though they are now the machine's default device.
Windows 7 rig with a Xonar DX sound card.
So far none of the following has resolved the issue:
1) Running the game as admin
2) enabling and disabling the sound in the game's config.
3) disconnecting the headphones (so as to remove the device from the system)
4) checking the 'force stereo' checkbox in the configuration utility
5) re-installing the game
If I set the machine's default back to the headphones then the game's sound works fine again (on the headphones). It is as if it has decided my headphones are the only viable sound output even if they are not present.
How can I fix this?
