Did you perform a clean uninstall before reinstalling the game?  Remnants of a previous install could be interfering with the new one.

If you've installed Ambitions, Late Night, Fast Lane, or Outdoor Living, the Unknown Error message is to be expected.  There are two fixes for this issue, and you may need to apply both.

It should be noted, though, that your computer is quite underpowered to be running TS3, especially if you have more than merely one or two of the earliest packs.  The processor and graphics card are likely inadequate or barely sufficient, and when paired with High Sierra your laptop may not be able to run the game at all.  You'll also have RAM issues if you're running other apps at the same time, although TS3 on a mac will only use 2 GB max.  The Unknown Error message could be your computer saying it can't run the game at all.  Read the posts linked below for more details, including a description of how to purge RAM, but the fact is there may be no way for you to get TS3 running on your laptop at all.
