Sims 4 family's getting deleted

★★★★★ Newbie

Hi so I made some family's in my sims 4 game. About 7-8 different family's. Suddenly I only have 3 family's, and it seems like I can't have more than 3. I've looked in the "save" file, but there's only the 3 recent family's I've played on. Hope you can help. Btw I play the sims 4 on a Mac.

@egsim02

Do you have enough free space on your Mac? How about if you choose Save As instead of Save?

My game is in my "documents" folder, and it is connected with my iCloud Drive. It keeps saying that I don't have enough space in my iCloud Drive, but I don't know what to do with it, because they're writing that all my stuff will get deleted if I remove my documents folder from my iCloud Drive.

@egsim02

You need to disable iCloud Drive so your Documents folder is stored locally on your Mac and not in the cloud. The game looks locally at Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 for your game data. Here are a couple of articles about turning it off and moving your data back:

★ Guide

This happened to me over Christmas with a new computer.  I moved the files in my documents to a folder directly in my user folder before turning it off.  Be careful because they are now set up that desktop and documents are on the iCloud.  You can't just move the files to your desktop and then switch the setting because you can still loose the documents.

Another solution is to move the copy of the Sims 4 to a USB thumb drive to insure that it is safe.

Just want to clarify a couple of things:

  1. When setting up a new Mac or after updating to a newer version of macOS, part of the set up process includes configuring iCloud settings. The user should make sure they read each step and not just accept every default setting Apple have chosen. iCloud Drive is automatically enabled but the user is prompted to accept this, or disable iCloud Drive. By disabling it nothing will be stored in the cloud unless the setting is changed in System Preferences manually after finishing the setup or at a later date.
  2. When disabling iCloud Drive all the documents are still stored in the cloud, they can be moved over to the local machine without losing anything. The two links I provided confirm this.
