Sims 3 Won't Launch: Unknown Error Occurred on Mac

★★★★★ Newbie

Over the last few days, I have tried to install the Late Night expansion pack and the High End Loft stuff pack onto my Mac. My game was working perfectly before I tried to install these two add-ons however, Sims 3 will no longer launch or work in any way. I have tried everything I could think of or find on Internet forums to fix the issue. When I attempt to launch through Origin it comes up with the message "Unknown error occurred." It then closes the message box and the Sims 3 stops trying to open. I have also tried to open the game through my applications files, the same error message appears and nothing works when I try that way too.

I also tried to look up the issue on the Internet and found that the Late Night Expansion Pack has caused issues for Mac users before. After trying several different intricate ways to try and fix the problem through moving files with the package contents myself, the results displayed the same error message. I found a YouTube video with steps on how to fix the issue and it still displayed the same error message after I carefully followed each step.

As well as this I tried deleting the expansion and re-downloading it back onto my computer numerous times and even deleting the whole game and re-downloading it, however, both of these proved unsuccessful also. One of the times I tried to re-download the expansion pack, Origin got stuck "finalising" the downloads, however, the downloads and Origin were completely unresponsive.

If you have any other ideas onto how I can fix the issue, please help me out, as after days of trying I am worried that I may not be able to use my only expansion pack or The Sims 3 game in general.

I have attached a photo of the message that keeps popping up instead of launching the game and a photo of one set of instructions that I tried but did not work.

@Lighttdark1  The instructions you found to move files around are necessary in many cases, but not yours.  In case you're curious, they apply whenever one of the problem packs—Ambitions, Late Night, Fast Lane, or Outdoor Living—is not your newest pack by the date EA released it.  But LN is your newest pack, so that step doesn't apply to you.

The one step you do need to complete is to create an alias for Late Night in Applications, alongside the alias for the base game.  High-End Loft Stuff should already have one.

If this alone doesn't help, you'll need to do a clean uninstall and start from scratch.  You can keep your existing saves, or even your entire game folder that contains them (the one in Documents), elsewhere, and put it back when you're done.  Sometimes the leftover library files can prevent you from launching the game going forward.

Once you've installed the base game, run the Super Patch (digital download version) to patch the game to 1.67.  The launcher doesn't do a thorough job of patching, and the Super Patch won't hurt.  In fact, even if creating an alias fixes the unknown error issue, it's still a good idea to run the patch.

And if Origin itself locks up or otherwise doesn't cooperate, you can run the reset tool for macs:

P.S.  You don't need to launch TS3 through Origin; just use the alias you create for Late Night.  In fact, you could uninstall Origin entirely if you wanted, and your game would still run the same.

@spongebob1245  Can you describe how you're trying to download content?  Which browser are you using, and which "app," i.e. which icon, are you choosing to open the downloads.  Can you actually play TS3 right now?

This was extremely helpful for me! I still needed to use Corey_0414's workaround after doing a clean uninstall/reinstall plus super patch. Bluebellflora's step-by-step directions are really great, thanks so much @puzzlezaddict for sharing those links.
