My Sims 3 expansion packs are suck on finalizing and unknown error occurs

★★★ Newbie

I have been trying to play Sims 3 for 2 weeks now. I just got a new Macbook pro and The sims 3 expansion packs won't finalize. And I keep getting an unknown error message as well. I have tried just about every solution.

@Shawney1286  I've moved your thread to the dedicated Sims/mac section, as this is where you'll get mac-specific help.

The unknown error message has several causes, depending on the specs of your computer.  So the best approach now is to start with a clean uninstall of everything TS3.  If you don't remove the hidden library files, you may keep getting unknown errors, even if you do everything else right.

You should also run the Origin reset tool for macs, to get rid of the finalizing issue.

Next, install only the base game, and run the Super Patch (digital download version) to patch the game to 1.67.  The launcher doesn't always do a good job of patching, and the Super Patch won't hurt.

Now try to launch the game.  If you still get an unknown error, you'll need to edit TS3's .sgr files to force recognition of your graphics card.  We can help with that; just provide the specs of your mac, along with the device ID of your card.  Here's how to find that info:

If the base game launches, you can install your packs.  Four of them—Ambitions, Late Night, Fast Lane, and Outdoor Living—won't install correctly, so you'll need to apply two workarounds.  The first is simple: create an alias for each pack that doesn't already have one in Applications, alongside the alias for the base game.

The second workaround is to copy files from those packs into the folder for your newest pack by the date EA released it.  This is only necessary if one of the problem packs is not your newest.  So for example, if you only have the base game, High-End Loft Stuff, and Late Night, you can skip this step, as LN is your newest pack.  But if you have any newer packs, the files for LN need to be copied over.  This video explains how:

Finally, if the process goes wrong at any point, or you have any questions, feel free to ask.  Just list your mac's specs, as well as the packs you'd like to install.
