Living with another Sims

I have these two Sims they are friends and both are men. One of the men has a baby and the other is single but helps out the friend with the kid. 

I wanted them to live together, but when I moved them into the same place their last names changed. Then I used life points to change the last name back to his original last name and it changed the father and his babies last name to the other guys. 

Is there a way to keep their last names as is when they are only friends?

Can we perhaps get an option when we ask another Sims to move in to move in as friends and or other?

I do not think so

Everyone in the same household have/get the same last name

No matter if the move in as a romantic couple or friends
