Update resulted in constant error message

I've had my Sims3 game and Sims3 Ambitions installed on my Toshiba for quite some time now. It has always worked fine. I got message that there was a new update available when I opened my game launcher so I updated. Once the update had finished and I opened the launcher back up nothing loaded and this message popped up: "Your The Sims 3 Base Game is incompatible with the current Sims 3 Expansion Pack. Please update your game via the game launcher. I close the error box and my launch stays blank and acts like it is loading but never does. The only way I am able to close out of the launcher is through the task manager on my computer.
