Sims 3 base game is imcompatible with expansion pack

Hi have recently bought the sims 3 and the downloader recommended that I downloaded an update or a patch im not sure as im new to this game. At the time I had the ambitions expansion cd in the drive because i wanted to play the game . Now every time I try to click on the desktop icon it comes up with the message

'sims 3 base game is incompatible with the expansion pack. Please update your game via the game launcher'

Do i need to competely uninstall and reinstall the game?

but the games launcher isn't working ....help please!

What is your base game version right now ?

To find out, open your launcher and hover over the little base game icon in the lower left part of the launcher. It should say 1.38.
