Not compatible? [ Edited ]

So i paid for the Sims 3 starter pack...

Waited hours for the base game to downloaded and install, then tried to install the expansion "University life". Only it's telling me that it's not compatible with the sims 3 version i have downloaded....!?! I've read that i need to get codes here there and everywhere in order to patch it or something? But i am completely computer stupid and need someone to dumb down all the technical lingo for me and just guide me through what it is EXACTLY that i need to do.

Kind of pissed i even need to do anything at all in honesty...never had to work so damn hard for something i've already purchased before.

@AimyMill Did you download the game from Origin client? If so, right click the Sims 3 game tile in the client and select 'Check for Updates'. After this right click the tile again and select 'View Game Details' and from that page try downloading/installing the expansion again.
