Having issues when my sims3 return from university

Hi, I’m sure it has been asked before but I do not frequent these forums...
I am playing Sims3 university life. I have developed my characters they have degrees etc. When it comes time to head home they arrive...in a sense. Attached shows the issue at hand. When they arrive home they are melded into one character. I have no interaction capabilities with them besides editing the house...time passes, weather can change, but that is about all that can happen. My sims panel is limited to moods, even on that panel there are none.
Things I have done:
Removed all store content
Removed cache file etc-
Restarted my computer
Saved another file and renamed it
Took away their free will (one of my characters still manage to go home curse you child!)
I have a Mac: horrible computer for playing games.
I would prefer not to have to start over...help would be appreciated please!

I moved this to the Sims 3 forum as it doesn't look like a mac specific issue.
Would you mind using a mod ? Looks like some kind of corruption on your save and I can recommend ErrorTrap for that (just google)
