Two player NHL18 issue

So whenever I play with a friend, In the middle of a game the players will become unresponsive or skate in a random direction. Usually happens on the guest controller. Used to think it was a controller issue when I played NHL17 but still happening on NHL18 and on brand new console and controllers. Any ideas?
