Online game play- won't let me play

I have the disc version of the game, got it for christmas. Played through the story but wanted to have a go online but it is telling me i have to upgrade to play online ! How can i get around this  ?

Can I ask what Platform you're playing on?

Are you getting any specific error codes when you try to play Online?
