No online invites?

Last night a buddy and me made and joined our crew, got into the same map and both chose night, but we could not receive a race invite from each other, no matter who started the race and sent the invite. Then we started talking and realized for the past week, we have never seen an invite come from anyone when playing online.

Is something broken with the online invites? Really frustrating as that is a big part of this and cannot ever seem to play with anyone online, friends or others.
