Looking for Co-Op play solutions...

Please Help... I bought PVZ:2 because it said they can play up to 4 players in co-op mode. I was excited to find a game all 3 of my kids could play together. But split screen only allows for 2 players. Will online multiplayer mode allow them all to play together on the same console or that feature only for joining other players who are logged in on their own consoles? Is there a way for 3 players to play this game without another console?
