at 42% even though I passed it, something seemed to install and the progress bar disappeared for a while

Are those the files in the _Installer folder?

This is really quite pathetic to be frank. I'm on Windows10 64 bit. Core i7. 32GB RAM. GTX1070.

I've purchased dozens of games on steam, some from indie developers, and never a single problem.

Installed Destiny 2 with Blizzard's Battle.net. No problem.

Heck. Even installed Escape from Tarkov with Battlestar Games launcher. No problem.

But first time using the Origin installer? Fails with some archaic message about DirectX.

Pains me to say it for as hyped as I was for this game, but should I be demanding a refund at this point? This is shoddy shoddy programming. Disappointed

So after digging around a bit, here's what I found, though I don't know if there's a remedy for it.

Here's the relevant snippet of the Install.log file in the __Installer folder:

18:28:12 Started DirectX Install Phase
18:28:12 Launching process:

-----snip----

18:28:28 Process exited with exit code -9.
18:28:28 Error installing DirectX runtime. Please check DirectX install log file typically in C:\Windows\Logs\DirectX.log.
19:23:10 Installer finished with exit code: 1
19:23:10 Shutting down data reader.

The relevant snippet at the end of the DXError.log file referenced in the Install.log file above:

[02/13/19 19:52:59] module: dxupdate(Mar 30 2011), file: dxupdate.cpp, line: 2409, function: RunProcess

Failed API: CreateProcess()
Error: (193) - %1 is not a valid Win32 application.

--------------------
[02/13/19 19:52:59] module: dxupdate(Mar 30 2011), file: dxupdate.cpp, line: 3426, function: InstallEXE

RunProcess() failed.

--------------------
[02/13/19 19:52:59] module: dxupdate(Mar 30 2011), file: dxupdate.cpp, line: 5829, function: DirectXUpdateInstallPlugIn

InstallEXE() failed.

--------------------
[02/13/19 19:52:59] module: dsetup32(Mar 30 2011), file: dxupdate.cpp, line: 280, function: CSetup::InstallPlugIn

DirectXUpdateInstallPlugIn() failed.

--------------------
[02/13/19 19:53:00] module: dsetup32(Mar 30 2011), file: setup.cpp, line: 1727, function: CSetup::SetupForDirectX

InstallPlugIn() failed.

I bolded the line where the error is occurring. This is not a user related error. This is entirely a result of extremely bad programming.

I don't know if it's that the wrong directx redistributables got packaged or if it's a problem with the origin launcher. Attempting to run DXSETUP.exe in the __Installer\directx\redis folder results in the same UNHANDLED error.

At this point, it's a support issue.

Same problem as the game stopped the download and failed the install in the middle of the download a because of the failing to install redistributable DirectX.  Now downloader is no longer active and the game says pre-loaded but I know that it is not because only 23GB are in the directory.  Had the same problem with the demo but the install failure was happening at the end and by removing the cabinet files from the DirectX directory I was able to bypass the DirectX install and start the game.  Now I am not sure what I can do because the install is clearly incomplete but the game says pre-loaded.  Never had any problem with Steam or direct game installers so I am thinking it is Origin which is causing Windows to not allow access to the DirectX directory where the redistributable files are written.  Not sure what to do at this point.

Munkor's solution worked for me, but make sure you start Origin client as administrator.

There's also a post on this subject in the origin web client forum. It might be better to continue the discussion there since it's definitely an origin client issue.

FYI. I found the problem and posted a solution in a separate thread so it wouldn't get lost in the clutter of posts.

TO FIX GO INTO REGEDIT AND CHANGE THIS, NO RESTART IS REQUIRED.

Navigate to the following keys:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectX
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\DirectX

Then change the key 4.09.00.0904 to 4.08.00.0904

This actually worked - It was some information used for another game and I tried on this and it worked for me!!! Hopefully can help someone else!
