This game is so laggy tonight compared to last night. Not sure what was happening last night but tonight the game is performing like absolute dog doodoo. Momentary freezes, loss of player control, what appears to be network lag but when you look the highest ping spike is 70ms. In NHL 20 I never had trouble playing a smooth 70 ping game. It was a little muddy but I was able to keep up. This edition the spikes are so sporadic and random and don't match the network performance at all.

Back to Be A Pro. I'm trying to build rank and can't do it when 10% of the game is spent not being able to control my player.

Another one from Ones Eliminator. I'm red, and you'll see me just skate off to nowhere seemingly for no reason..

Same match. I just skate off for no reason again.

One of your videos showed 3% packet loss. That would be why this is happening. Can you run that UO Trace for me?

Could be. I had one game last night that was 6% loss too. Packet loss is definitely not ideal if these are TCP transactions. Honestly though, the loss of control of my player does not seem to be related to packet loss. The lag spikes are and I can usually tell the difference. Here's how:

1) When I lose control of my player, everything else in the game runs normal. It's only my ability to control my player that is lost. Everyone else in the game looks unaffected.

2) When I experience lag, the whole game is affected. I will see the game slow down and the speed up. This is generally what I would consider a network problem, knowing how TCP connections work. TCP connections make sure all packets are received, which is why you get the "fast forward" effect whenever you experience lag. That's the game receiving all the packets that it did not get before and trying to catch up.

Anyway, here are the results of my UO trace. I removed the first line as it pertains to my PCs connection to my router and should not be relevant (shows 0% packet loss and 0ms ping).

Host Name IP Address Hop Ping Time Ping Avg % Loss Pkts r/s Ping best/worst

cm-1-acr09.cosprings.co.denver.co96.120.12.221 2 11ms 9ms 0% 130 / 130 7ms / 24ms
ae-255-1251-rur101.cosprings.co.d68.86.105.137 3 8ms 10ms 0% 130 / 130 7ms / 20ms
ae-23-ar01.denver.co.denver.comca68.86.128.105 4 11ms 12ms 0% 130 / 130 7ms / 31ms
ae-13.edge8.Denver1.Level3.net 4.68.63.165 5 24ms 13ms 0% 129 / 130 9ms / 30ms
* Unknown Host * 0.0.0.0 6 0ms
* Unknown Host * 4.79.23.202 7 54ms 100% 0 / 129
* Unknown Host * 159.153.92.10 8 50ms 52ms 1% 127 / 129 48ms / 62ms
* Unknown Host * 159.153.92.78 9 51ms 60ms 0% 128 / 129 49ms / 100ms
dragonage.gos.ea.com 159.153.64.173 10 51ms 52ms 0% 129 / 129 49ms / 68ms

I'm getting 100% packet loss to the 4.79.23.202 address. Not sure if that is normal. That server could be blocking ICMP. 1% loss to the 159.153.92.10 address seems relevant.

I'm also going to play a few games of NHL 20 to see if I get the same problem.

The 100% loss is normal. That just means that server isn't allowing pings. Your test is showing some packet loss as well. Are you running it on a wired or wireless connection? It looks wireless and should be run wired since you play on a wired connection. If possible, take the cord from your console and plug it into your PC. That way it's also using the same ethernet cord.

I worked with Comcast last night and hopefully sorted out the packet loss problem. Here is a fresh UO trace.

dragonage.gos.ea.com 159.153.64.173 10 53ms 52ms 0% 104 / 104 49ms / 70ms

I did play a couple of Ones Eliminator games this morning to test. I did not experience any network lag, but unfortunately the loss of control of my skater persisted. I played a few of drop-in NHL 20 games last night and never lost control of my skater.

In conclusion, while I was experiencing packet loss which did negatively impact the online experience of the game, it does not appear to be related to the loss of control of my skater.

Next step, I am going to switch to a different controller and see if that changes anything. Throughout this whole process I have not tried a different input device. The controller I have been using currently does not appear to have any problems as I played a few NHL 20 games online last night without trouble. In talking with some of my friends they have not had this problem in 21 and can see me drifting in games. I am only using the 1st party wireless controllers from MS. I have 4, so I will try one of the others and see what happens.

Sounds good. Let me know what happens with the other controllers. Also, you have a bit of a high worst rating for your router. If you're wired, that should be in the single digits, but you're showing a worst ping of 3 ms. That's not good for a wired connection. Have you also checked for a firmware update for your router?

I have a Comcast tech scheduled to be here tomorrow to troubleshoot the packet loss. The packet loss appears to be the underlying problem. The problem manifests slightly different in NHL 20 than in NHL 21. Anyway, I believe that once the packet loss problem is solved, the loss of control of my skater will also be solved. Thank you for the help. Turns out it was ISP and not the game. Devil

Hello, again I have the same problem as in the NHL20, and that is that I have delayed reactions of players and you even though I have a new internet via cable, and a stable 20ms response during the game, and yet players do not manage to congratulate the opponent's players even though they have full energy and the opponent has a player with a lower rating.
