Game "stops working" when clicking anywhere on the character select screen

I've been having a problem where I get an error whenever I click anywhere on the character select screen.  The error is a windows error that comes up and says "Star Wars: The Old Republic has stopped working" and then makes me click Close program which closes off the game.  I have tried rebooting multiple times and nothing seems to let me log in.

I'm running Windows 10 with all current updates.

Appears to be an issue with creator try this ,First right mouse click on the game shortcut and select properties , then comparability tab , from there tick "disable full screen optimisations"

Then when you press play press ALT + Enter keys to go to window mode and set the game to run as fullscreen (window) for now

See if this stops the crashing at present

I've been suffering from this problem as well, repairing game install files through the launcher and restarting the PC both have no effect on the problem. It sometimes launches normally and sometimes doesn't.

From what I've found online, in the past, it doesn't matter what planet my toons were last on, what toon, what faction, starting in fullscreen, windowed, or windowed fullscreen, it seems completely random.

Your suggested fix doesn't work as pressing Alt causes the freeze and subsequent crash.

If the game is in fullscreen place it initially into window mode per the client_setting file edit in this guide link

Have you tried to turn game mode off per this link

Hey folks, A few updates on this situation. For players that have updated Windows 10 to the Creator Edition, they can experience an issue in SWTOR that causes a crash to desktop. This seems to be primarily caused by being alt-tabbed out of the game and focusing on another window while SWTOR is open and loading. The team is looking into fixing the problem and I will pass on updates as I have them. In the meantime there are three workarounds which have had some success. 1) Disable vsync on your video card. 2) Disable Game Mode in Windows. 3) In Windows, disable the full-screen optimization option for SWTOR. I believe the fix for this is to do a clean install of the nvidia drivers , and at present do not install anything but the driver , ie. do not install geforce experience, shield etc

Glad to know Bioware is at least aware of the issue, I hope they're able to implement a solution soon.

Game mode is off and changing window mode doesn't seem to affect the issue, it's still hit and miss when it works and when it won't. Nvidia advice doesn't apply in this case as I use AMD cards, I'd already tried rolling back my cards' drivers and that didn't work. So I doubt that would work on the Nvidia side either.

All to do is patiently wait for a solution to be implemented.

For me, I am using a Logitech Gaming Keyboard (G105) and closing the Logitech Gaming Framework process allows me to start swtor without any issues. This was not an issue before the creators update and I only experience issues with SWTOR, but this was my fix. (I tried disabling ever process one by one, and this one fixed it. I have tested it now with success over 10 times).

I just start the program again after swtor opens (so I can use any of my text shortcuts still).
