I have seen this issue with EVGA cards one link and another here
Short answer use precision and downclock by -25MHz and increase the voltage by 12mV
Long answer is email EVGA and request a Firmware update
What is occurring is the card is unstable under Directx 9 with the overclocks used by the EVGA card

officially evga firmware is by email , I have seen sites storing the firmware updates but not an official location.
in the short term if you downclock manually things will stabilize and stop this occurring , whilst waiting
Firmware does the downclock instead of manually doing it
example firmware update details , first two are what is occurring as listed in my previous post
reduces the 3d boost ( -25MHz )
increase the voltage on some power states
fixes the display port
fixes DSR with more than one monitor.
fixes EVGA PRO bridge LED ( fix was already in 84.04.2F.00.80 )
fixes SLI red screen flickering in very high resolutions with some monitors ( fix was already in 84.04.2F.00.80

Oh ok that does make complete sense. Evga must have overclocked the cards too much. I wonder if this means I cant overclock the card anymore or maybe its just because dx9 games?
In any case thank you very much for your help!

They are already overclocked from reference , so wouldn't overclock more
nVidia designed the GPU to run at 1126Mhz with 1216Mhz boost
While we are talking firmware ensure your 840 EVO has its firmware updated to fix a nasty performance issue
See here
Edit - will amend the name of this post to make it more identifiable for others if same issue

This is essentially what is pretty much happening to me in my own thread I made.
Wondering if underclocking it will help but I have no idea wtf I'm doing in that department. ;/

Well I went through the whole process of updating my gpus bios and its still doing the same thing so I have no idea what else to try. It just keeps popping the swtor loading screen up like it has to load in stuff because its not fast enough...
