Controller being recognised as flight stick

I've used an X52 with the game and didn't like it, so wanted to switch over to a controller. I've got a speedlink XBox style one and a (genuine) PS4 one however both of them are recognised as flight sticks rather than controllers, which makes setting up the controls a pain. It also appears to detect the thumbstick as an axis, which means when I want to change the throttle value I need to hold it in the same position the whole time, rather than just being able to incremetally increase / decrease it and leave it there. Is there a way to fix these two problems?
