Can’t connect to friends in mut squads

I’m trying to play mut squads with a friend in the United States. I’m currently stationed in Australia. I can see his name to send him an invite to my game session but he can’t see mine to send me an invite to his. When I select “play as any role” the game searches for a game and never finds one.  Why am I unable to play mut squads?  Is it because I’m in Australia?  Is the mode region locked?  I’m able to connect with people on seasons mode. Please help
