Re: "updatetool.exe has stopped working"

@iaf3ta  Try doing a clean uninstall of Origin and reinstalling the latest version.  Clear Origin's cache first, then uninstall "the hard way."  This shouldn't uninstall any of your games.

Instead of downloading the ThinSetup, use the full Origin installer.  This is the direct download link:

http://download.dm.origin.com/origin/live/OriginSetup.exe

Be sure to run the installer as an admin, as in, right-click on the installer and select "Run as administrator."

I finally figured it out on my own!

Manually uninstall the Origin your Sims game is trying to download when you load up the game--this apparently is not the version of Origin that needs to be installed.

To uninstall I normally just type in "uninstall" into my windows search bar and scroll until I find "ORIGIN" and click "UNINSTALL ORIGIN."

When you completely uninstall DO NOT try to download the game yet. Go to WWW.ORIGIN.COM and download the application directly from the site. (It is recommended that you download this application on the primary account of your computer to avoid more issues). This way you get the updated version of Origin. After Origin completely downloads from the website THEN you can insert your game and it should work just fine.

I hope this helps, I was very frustrated and couldn't figure it out because the disk was automatically downloading an incorrect Origin application and doing it through the website finally fixed the problem.

@gabilicioso I tried downloading from Origin directly as opposed to off the Sims disk, but all I get is an application error. Unable to start correctly (0xc0000007b) and won't proceed further. Recently updated from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and origin won't even download. Previously Origin wouldn't exit offline mode.

Re: "updatetool.exe has stopped working"

@itz_Noel16  Start with a couple of basic checks of your Windows system files.  Here's how to run them:

  • Hit Windows key-X
  • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Command prompt (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
  • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes into the window, and enter
  • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here
  • After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key-X again
  • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Command prompt (Administrator)”
  • Inside the window, copy and paste “sfc /scannow” without quotes into the window, and enter
  • Post the message you receive here

Please also make sure .NET 3.5 and 4.8 are both installed.  Hit Windows key-R and enter "appwiz.cpl" without quotes.  In the File Explorer window that opens, click "Turn Windows features on or off," and you'll see this:

Windows features (+.NET).png

Make sure both .NET entries (in the first red box at the top) look like this, minus the fact that 4.7 is now 4.8.

Please also check which VC++ runtimes you have installed.  Hit Windows key-i, select Apps, scroll down to the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables, take a screenshot of the whole list, and attach it to a post.

@puzzlezaddict Hi there! I have gotten error after error and even changed the administrator in System32 ready to delete (rename) about 5 .dll files and add in newer updates .dll files of the same name... I used this website instructions and watched a video a few times over before following along haha https://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/windows-7-how-to-delete-files-protected-by-trustedinstaller/ )
1st error: MSVCP140.dll is missing
So my system wasn't finding updates so I went directly to Windows to do it. (since the 11th I have downloaded THE SAME set of updates MULTIPLE times...thinking if is ALREADY downloaded them correctly, or at ALL, they wouldn't find I needed them...frustrating.
2nd error after this was the 0xc000007b 'application unable to start'
I searched and searched until I found this simply goes to a KB2919355 update that IS HAPPENING but my system isn't using it...
I come to find that IT SEEMS to be a VC++ issue that the redistribables are NOT happening and I searched THAT and it took me BACK to the issue with these .dll files but NOT the one I mentioned in the error above.

I have a brother who has his masters in communication systems and a son with a computer engineering degree and they both reply to take it to geek squad and just backup everything before going in, and upgrade to Windows 10. I have 8.1 currently and I REALLY don't want to do that. UGH... I am afraid after changing the System32 that I did SOMETHING as it DID wipe out my security saved logins as well as when I went to login today after stepping away from the whole fiasco yesterday that it was telling me windows couldn't start and to try later then when I clicked on OK it said something about where to find my KEY for Windows. I was like WTF...soooo yeahhhh... If you KNOW PCs and any of this sounds remotely familiar...advice?? It just seems like I need some outdated files and its not grabbing them on the update?? Also, I play SIMS 4 on XB1 and decided to buy for PC with the sale happening and Origin won't install which is what started me down this rabbit hole... I have not turned this PC on since exactly a year ago so it has set for a year and not been plugged in or used as its a desktop and I have used my laptop. I am open to utilizing TeamViewer...which is what my son and brother looked at things quickly with.

Re: "updatetool.exe has stopped working"

@MyMichelet  I'm not sure what's going on with your Windows key, so I'll leave that alone.  Hopefully this is a one-time error, but if not, you might need to contact Microsoft.

Error 0xc000007b is a difficult one to deal with sometimes, unfortunately.  Since I don't know what's going on with your system, it's best to start with some repairs and updates.  If you get an error at any point and can't complete a step, please stop there, take a screenshot of the error, and attach it to a reply.  For the repairs:

Restart your computer, and manually run any pending updates (even if you've done this before, the update tool might not have found them all).  Hit Windows key-i, select Update & Security, and click the button to check for updates.  If there are a number pending, it may take a few tries, with restarts in between, to run them all.

Next, uninstall all your VC++ runtimes and download new ones from Microsoft.  Hit Windows key-i, select Apps, scroll down to Microsoft Visual C++ [year] Redistributables, click on each one starting with 2010, and click Uninstall.  Leave the earlier ones if you have them—Origin doesn't use them, but other apps you have on your computer might.

You can download new copies directly from Microsoft.  If your computer is 64-bit, be sure to install both the x64 and x86 versions.

2010 x64:  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=13523

2010 x86:  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8328

2013:  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40784

2015:  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145

Please also use these guides to clearing Origin's cache and uninstalling it "the hard way" to clear out all Origin-related files from your computer.

https://help.ea.com/en-us/help/faq/clear-cache-to-fix-problems-with-your-games/

https://help.ea.com/en-us/help/origin/origin/manually-uninstalling-origin/

Restart your computer, download the full Origin installer, and run it as an admin: right-click on the Origin download and select "Run as administrator."  This is a direct download link:

http://download.dm.origin.com/origin/live/OriginSetup.exe

If none of this helps, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.
