black screen when in game

Sims 4, I had been playing the sims4 without any issues before having to update and also once downloading the holiday pack, every time I go into build mode the screen goes black, the game is still in play but in order to go back to the screen/game you have to press escape button, but then any thing else you do after that (Ie play mode) the screen goes black again. This is really frustrating. Can you please let me know what the problem is and how to solve it 😳😊. Thank you
