Unrecognized video card

I upgraded my video card and The SIms 3 don't recognize it, should I play the game on the lowest graphics? I don't know how the game even work without recognizing the video card, and I don't want to destroy my game or my PC, I will hurt to play on 16:9 ratio? should I play on an older PC?
