I don't have enough space on my computer for the sims. Whenever I try to download it to my USB drive it says that it cannot save games to the root directory. I don't know a lot about computers so I have no clue what this means and what to do to fix it.

Could you try if it works if you create a folder on your USB and then use that as installation path instead.
The root directory is usually the one that's right on top.
Like the root directory for your c drive would be c:\
So it's possible if you try to install to g:\ (g being an example drive letter for your USB drive) it might not work but if you use g:\Origin it would.
That said, I don't recommend installing the game on an USB as you might have performance issues and if you remove the drive from your computer, you might get a different letter the next time which can lead to issues.
