Travel to another town

★ Guide

Ok - not sure if this is possible? Can you move a sim out of the family and to another town, allow the original family to carry on via the AI, then move your sim back to the original town. It would be a bit like a child going on a gap year and returning to the fold. When you return you would visit the original family and still be recolonised as a family member?

Re: Travel to another town

@silverwood02  The answer is yes, sort of, but not without mods.

In the vanilla (modless) game, if you move a sim to a new town, the original world is destroyed, and all of its data is lost.  There's no way to go back and any sims left behind are unrecoverable.  This doesn't apply to traveling, of course, so if you wanted a sim to go to University or just wander around one of the vacation destinations, it would work fine.  But if you're talking about living elsewhere as a home, maybe getting a job and starting a family before returning, then no, it's not possible.

With mods, specifically NRaas Traveler, you can have multiple worlds connected to one game, and the data for those worlds is preserved.  You could travel with your sim to any world you have installed, change the sim's hometown, and play forward from there, while the original family remains intact in the previous town.

The one thing you can't do is have the AI advance those sims in any way.  Since only one world can be simulated at a time, sims who live elsewhere will be hibernating and not change in any way, except if you allow them to age.  (You can manually adjust these settings by clicking on City Hall, selecting Ageless Foregin Sims and specifying which worlds you'd prefer not to age.)

Here's the procedure to switch a sim's homeworld without losing access to the previously played world:

If you do decide to add Traveler to your game, you'll want to use NRaas ErrorTrap and Overwatch as well, to help clean up save game data.  These three mods will also protect your game from travel transition breakage in general, which is especially common in long-term saves.
