And you don't have any mods?

Try resetting your files to factory settings.

  • Make a backup; copy your The Sims 4-folder from C:\Users\Username\Documents\Electronic Arts to an external drive or somewhere else on your computer, for example your desktop.
  • Rename the The Sims 4-folder in C:\Users\Username\Documents\Electronic Arts to The Sims 4_backup
  • Start the game, make a new save, and see if the error is gone.
(The game will have created a new The Sims 4-folder in your documents, this is supposed to happen)

      • If yes, continue
      • If no, post a reply telling us the error is still there
  • Start putting folders back in the new The Sims 4-folder. Observe! After every file/folder, start the game and make sure it still works, before putting in the next one.
    • Options.ini - your game settings
    • Saves - your old saves. The sub-folders are not needed. If putting these back causes problem, try putting one back at a time.
    • Screenshots
    • Custom music - if you have any
    • Tray - your library objects; like lots, rooms and sims
    • Mods - your mods and cc, might cause problems when putting back

If putting back one of the folders was problematic and you did not work it out, please post a reply and we'll see if we can find what your problem is!

I took my Mods folder from my Sims 4 folder, and did what you said to do, but it won't let me open the game even if I put one folder back in. It comes up with the same error message.

I hope you can help me Tongue out

So it works without the folders?
Does it matter which one you put in?

Like, only the tray folder, or only the saves-folder?

Or which folders are you talking about? Mods? Standard smile

Oh okay, even when you did the backup thing and let the game create a completely new folder?

Okay, try this:

  • If the game created a new The Sims 4 folder in Documents/Electronic Arts, delete it.
  • If you have your own files there, move the The Sims 4 folder to the desktop, so there's no The Sims 4 folder in Electronic Arts.
  • Delete Origin cache
    https://crinrict.com/blog/2014/09/delete-origin-cache-files.html
  • Repair the game
  • Try to start it (don't move anything back at all)

I did exactly what you told me to do, I deleted the Sims 4 Folder that the Sims 4 generated, and repaired the game. After it was finished I clicked PLAY and it wouldn't work still. It came up with the SAME error message. "Unable to start: Cannot start because required game data is missing or damaged. Please repair or reinstall the game via origin."

I'm getting concerned now.. Hopefully there is another solution. Confused

Please post a DxDiag:
https://help.ea.com/en-us/help/pc/how-to-gather-dxdiag-information/

Do you  get any specific code or does it just say that?

Maybe you have to uninstall everything and redo it, I mean the game worked before?

  • Uninstall the sims,
  • Delete the The Sims folder that was just created
  • Manually uninstall Origin (instructions - check where it says "the hard way"),
  • Download and reinstall Origin.
  • Make sure Origin is white-listed in your security programs
  • Make sure Origin is run as administrator (Right click the icon on your desktop, choose settings, choose compatibility, check the bottom box: run as admin)
  • Start Origin
  • Go to settings and disable automatic updates (if C&D could be the problem)
  • Install The Sims 4
  • Start the game
  • Then you can install the packs, wait with C&D until I checked your dxdiag!

Hi @softhazedsim

have you tested without mods ?

Use the 50/50 method to find the culprit: http://modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Finding_Problem_Custom_Content
