Sims 4 Won't Open

★★★★★ Novice

I haven't played the sims 4 in about a month, so today I had to do all the big updates that came out recently, but after those installed every time I try to start the game it goes to a white screen before closing after 1-5 seconds. I know with the Snowy Escape update there's been a lot of crashing, but I thought that was once you were in the game. I tried repairing the game through Origin but that didn't work. Has anyone else been having this issue lately? Is there a fix for this?

Re: Sims 4 Won't Open

@AnneSims34  All the errors in your dxdiag reference the Nvidia graphics driver, so the place to start is with updating the driver.  You can get the newest one directly from Nvidia:

https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/166630/en-us

Please also make sure your monitor is plugged into the graphics card, not the motherboard.  I'm borrowing this helpful diagram from someone else:

Restart after installing the driver, and let me know whether the game works.

By the way, it may not be related to your Sims 4 issue, but Dell has a number of updates marked as urgent that your computer doesn't have, including BIOS.  So it's a good idea to at least run that update.

If you don't want to check for other updates manually, you could install the Dell Update Application, from the same page, and let the app take care of it for you.

Re: Sims 4 Won't Open

@AnneSims34  Please try disabling Origin in-game: hover over your username, select Application Settings, then the Origin in-game header, and disable the option at the top.

If that doesn't help, please move your entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents\Electronic Arts and onto your desktop.  When you launch the game, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  Don't add anything to this folder yet; just see whether you can get far enough to start a new save and play in live mode for a bit.

If you still get the white screen in a clean folder, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

I tried disabling Origin and using a clean folder, but there was no change, so I ran a dxdiag and I'm attaching it here. Is there anything else I should try?

I was having this issue too today after I downloaded more packs. Do you have any mods? If so, move your mods folder to your desktop. Delete the mods folder and attempt to open the game.

Updating Nvidia worked perfectly! Thank you so much for your help. Is there any way I can put my old saves back in the new Sims 4 folder that was created? Thanks again for helping me with this.

Re: Sims 4 Won't Open

@AnneSims34  Yes, you can copy the old saves to the new folder and keep playing, provided they run okay.  Saves are in the saves folder inside the Sims 4 folder.

It's a good idea to keep copies of your saves as backups, just in case—you never know when something might go wrong.
