Sims 4 Crashing Upon Attempts to Open

★★ Novice

Hi, I have a computer running on windows with an Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060. I have been trying to open the Sims 4 and every time I try to open the game there is a black screen that immediately stops responding as soon as I click anywhere. I made sure that I had no custom content or mods, repaired the game, uninstalled it and origin and then reinstalled everything and still it doesn't work. I have my DVDiag in a link below. If you could please help me get this straightened out I'd be very appreciative!

@MitchellL99  The drivers for both your integrated graphics chip and your dedicated card are quite old.  The Sims 4 errors in your dxdiag are probably also related to the Nvidia driver.  Unfortunately, MSI doesn't offer newer ones, but you can download the newest available drivers from Intel and Nvidia.  Install the Intel driver first, restart your computer, and then install the Nvidia driver.

Restart again, and see whether you can play.

I did what you said but it still isn't working. Do you have any other ideas to try?

Re: Sims 4 Crashing Upon Attempts to Open

@MitchellL99  Please try to launch the game a couple more times, then look for any Sims 4-related entries in the Reliability Monitor.  Hit Windows key-R and enter "perfmon /rel" without quotes.  You'll see a list of errors and updates, with a column for each day.  (Today is all the way on the right.)

For any errors from after you updated the graphics drivers, click "View technical details," then copy the information and paste it into a text document.  (Notepad is fine.)  You can attach the file to a post as you did with your dxdiag.  Sometimes the Reliability Monitor doesn't update right away, so if you don't see any errors from when you were trying to play, be sure to check back an hour or two.  The timestamp on the initial chart can also be off by up to an hour, so that's not an entirely reliable metric, but the timestamp in the technical details should be accurate.

@MitchellL99  I didn't realize Steam was involved here.  Just to clarify, did you buy the game only through Steam, through both Steam and Origin, or did you buy and refund the game from one platform?  There are sometimes problems with each.

Please also clear Origin's cache, then uninstall it "the hard way."  Restart your computer, and reinstall Origin.

Try to play again, and let me know whether it works.

Re: Sims 4 Crashing Upon Attempts to Open

@MitchellL99  Okay, please generate a crash dump, so I can see what's going on in more detail.  Here's how:

  • Hit the Windows key, type "command prompt" in the box, right-click on Command Prompt in the search results, and select Run as Administrator
  • In the window, paste "reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\devenv.exe" /v DumpType /d 2 /t REG_DWORD" without the outside quotes (keep the inside quotes) into the box, and enter
  • Launch Sims 4 and let it stop working, or whatever the message is
  • When it does, wait for any crash dialogs to finish
  • Then hit Windows key-R and paste "%LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps" without quotes into the box, and enter
  • Upload the most recent .dmp file to the third-party filehosting site of your choice, and link it here
  • When you want to undo the auto crash log dumps, open Command Prompt as before, paste "reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps" /f" without the outside quotes, and enter.

It's possible you won't get a crash dump at all, which would itself be useful information.  Just let me know either way.
