Sims 4 Black Screen Crash

[ Edited ]
★★★★★ Novice

I have contacted EA, I have done compatibility mode to clean boot for this game. I have contacted person after person, repaired the game, updated it and still it crashes! I know its not my system, I update my drivers as much as possible and always check for updates. The crash is random but consistent, touch the roof too much boom black screen back to Origin. I touch a fence, go 3x speed, queue up an action, it will crash. Its not all the time either, I can speed up to sleep but sometimes if I pause to queue up the toilet it will crash when returning to 3x speed. This all started back in June, before the major update.

Please help, I really want to use the game again. I have not been able to play since this crash began due to only being able to play 5 minute increments.
I don't know what files would be needed to figure this out so I will send any game files like crash reports and such if asked.

Things I have Tried (Just to help with suggestions):

Clear Origin Cache,

Clear EA Cache,

Clean Install,

Clean Boot,

Entire wipe of my system,

Driver Updates, and

Compatibility mode.

@LittleGraveRaven  Please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

Re: Sims 4 Black Screen Crash

@LittleGraveRaven  Try playing in fullscreen and enabling vertical sync within the game's graphics options.  I believe the setting should stick right away, but just in case, enable v-sync, quit, reload the game, and then play.

If you get another crash, please try all of these, together:

  • Undo any compatibility mode you've set
  • Remove the Sims 4 folder in Documents\Electronic Arts
  • Clean boot your PC, and go through the Task Manager's background processes list shutting down anything that doesn't need to be running, including any Asus software
  • Load the game, enable v-sync, and quit
  • Start a new save in Willow Creek and see how it runs

Please also confirm that your in-game framerates are locked to 60.  Bring up the cheats console (crtl-shift-C) and enter "fps on" without quotes, and a number will appear in the lower left corner, over the UI.

Re: Sims 4 Black Screen Crash

@LittleGraveRaven  Please check for any new errors in the Reliability Monitor.  Hit Windows key-R and enter "perfmon /rel" without quotes.  You'll see a list of errors and updates, with a column for each day.  (Today is all the way on the right.)

For any errors in the last two days that mention Origin or Sims 4, or any that happened at the same time as a crash, click "View technical details," then copy the information and paste it into a reply here.  Sometimes the Reliability Monitor doesn't update right away, so if you don't see any related errors, be sure to check back an hour or two.  The timestamp on the initial chart can also be off by up to an hour, so that's not an entirely reliable metric, but the one within the technical details should be accurate.

If you don't see any related errors, that's useful information too.

Re: Sims 4 Black Screen Crash

@LittleGraveRaven  Please do a clean uninstall of the graphics driver, and instead of reinstalling the newest optional driver from AMD, use the recommended (WHQL) one dated June 29:

https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-5700-series/amd-radeon-rx-5700-series/amd-radeon-...

Instructions for a clean uninstall and reinstall are here:

https://crinrict.com/blog/2019/02/clean-re-install-of-graphics-drivers-with-display-driver-uninstall...

When you test, please use another clean Sims 4 folder, just to be thorough.

I uninstalled Sims, did the clean uninstall and reinstall and it still does the crashes :/. I did it twice to be sure, deleting the files and the second time deleting the game all together and nothing.

I don't understand why it isn't cooperating, I'm really worried at this point.

Re: Sims 4 Black Screen Crash

@LittleGraveRaven  Please try playing in a new admin Windows account.  The username should contain only letters and numbers, no special characters, accents, etc.  Make it a local account, as in, don't sign into Microsoft, and don't sync with any other services you normally use.  You'll be able to sign into Origin and shouldn't need to redownload anything.

If you get another crash, please post another dxdiag and any Reliability Monitor entries from the time of the crash.  The errors might be the same as before, but it's better to check.  And please let me know if the Reliability Monitor doesn't have any relevant errors: that's useful info as well.
