Sims 3 wont update

I am tryng to load a Sims expansion pack to Origin for my daughters Sims 3.

When i try to add it i get this 'Please use the Sims3 launcher and update your versionof the Sims 3 before installing this product'.

I go to Sims 3 and click the game update. it shows as loading. After when it shows update complete - I go back into the game and it STILL shows update available???

So frustrating - what are we doing wrong???
