(All my games are from disks, I'm running Windows 10 on a gaming pc.) The sims 3 base game works fine, but when I try and install any of the expansion packs I have, this happens to the town screen. By the looks of things, that is the only problem. First I tried generations and this happened. Next I uninstalled it and tried nightlife and the same thing happened. I'm not great with computers and I haven't been able to find anything online, so any help would be appreciated.

@eleanxr_dunkin Try running the Super Patch. The direct download link (to EA servers) is underneath "Cumulative base game 1.67 Super Patcher."
If that doesn't help, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

Please also go into Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3, open the file called config.log, copy the information between "Graphics device info" (about 25 lines down) and "Options" (about 40 lines down), and paste it here.

The super patch is downloading. Is it normal for it to say it's taking hours?

@eleanxr_dunkin The patch is about 1.7 GB in total. I don't know how fast your internet is, but "hours" seems a bit much.
Still, it's a good idea to manually patch any disc install that doesn't involve Origin. The launcher doesn't always do a thorough job of patching on its own, especially when discs with very old versions of Sims 3 are involved.

Also I don't have a file called config.log, but I do have one called DeviceConfig. This is the only thing on it:
