Sims 3 Starter Pack

I just purchased The Sims 3 starter pack on disc. It's been 26 hours since I started downloading this game and I still can't play it. Every time I try to log in, it says I need the update. I've downloaded the update 3 times and it just automatically says I need it again. The game won't let me play it without it. The system didn't give me an option about downloading Origin and I read somewhere that I don't have the option not to use it. What gives? Any ideas for troubleshooting?
