Sims 3 Riding Skill Not Improving (Mac)

I recently just started a Pets game in Appaloosa Plains. My sim is an equestrian but she can't learn the riding skill. I had her read the level one riding skill book and that gave her one skill level. But when she is riding her horse, the skill bar doesn't appear and the skill doesn't incerease when I check it from the skills tab. The horse gains skill and has the skill bar appear. I tried reseting the sim but that didn't do anything. I don't know what to do now.

Try moving the sim out and back in via edit town

I tried this but it didn't work. The skill is  not improving and the bar still doesn't show up.

just for testing purposes  ( and to rule out a save game corruption) go to edit town save a copy of your household to the libiary start a new game and palce your saved household from the libiary into that game and see if the skill starts to  skill up again

Still didn't work. The skill did not improve.

Can you try another Sim.

Well she is the only sim in my household. But I can create another one and test the skill.

Or just switch households and try a premade.

I switched households to a premade but there was no skill bar and no skill increase.
