I've just reinstalled Sims 3 on my brand new PC (which I apparently made the mistake of buying windows 10 for) and have encountered a serious issue when trying to run Sims 3. I load up the game, bypassing the normal launcher and in admin mode, and the starting videos run fine but when I gets to the scrolling text loading screen all I see is the progress bar on a black screen while the scrolling text overlaps itself leaving a purple-ish line. I have an AMD Radeon R9 390 8gb graphics card, the drivers are updated, and I've gone into the control center and added all the TS3W.exe files to the application list. I also tried the "add new graphics card to the list" fix and nothing seems to help. When I let the game load certain panels in the options and select screens are missing, just blank. If I leave the game running longer than a couple minutes it crashes.

Well nothing there will work (tried in vain) and researching the issues does show exactly why.

Microsoft with windows 10 started blocking the installation of rootkits, this means DRM such as Securom (which is the security package with Sims 3 and many other EA Titles) cannot install.

Essentially game installs, patches up fine, but when you run it you then get an error stating "A required security module cannot be activated. This program cannot be executed (8016)." If you run the launch analysis it says it again then asks to send a log file to securom.

This is on the Origin version version and I would wager the same for Disc.

There is a lot of people saying it works, but the difference is they upgraded to win10 from a prior OS. This would mean that Securom was likely already installed prior to upgrading. I personally took the opportunity to upgrade my hardware all around. Effectively new machine with a clean install of windows 10 (something that the other users blaming "Skylake" for, they are most likely a clean install aswell with windows 10 being the first OS on that motherboard/CPU. Its not the processor its Windows.

For those in this situation there are 4 ways this will get fixed.
1. Microsoft allows rootkits, thus allowing DRM such as Securom to install, but also allow other malicious programs to do the same unchecked. (hope not)
2. EA patch the games to a new DRM that works with a clean win 10 installation, or removes Securom and rely on the user logging in online (or no protection at all).
3. Apparently you can sign for the digital certificates yourself, Im not doing this as I agree with the security MS are attempting to provide here.
4. Not advisable with EA due to the logging into your account to play could result in a ban. But it has worked for other games (Fallout 3 for example which gave the exact same error) which is to use a No-CD patch. This is a use at your own risk suggestion in addition to the potential loss of your EA account, you dont know what else may be with that patch, Ie seen enough infected computers from users who would utilise them.

Personally I hope EA use this as an opportunity to mend some bridges and patch out DRM from the Securom infected titles. Possibly upgrading them to Denuvo, assuming that works with a windows 10 clean install.

1. The Microsoft articles state, that only DVD versions are affected by this issue, not the download one

2. The DVD version does not have SecuRom because of the lawsuit

So, I really don't see how people can get this message for Sims 3.

Can you explain that to me ?

• How far do you get? I have never even gotten to save my character. The game crashes like clockwork about 7 minutes from launch every time.
• Are you getting any error messages - if so, please post it  It just says there was an issue and SIMS has to close. THen it prompts troubleshooting. It was previously telling me the game was incompatible after running troubleshooting, but since updating my graphics cards it is now unable to give me a reason.

did you update to Win 10 or reinstall the operating system ? Is this the same computer you played Sims on already and did you ever have issues with it ? Are you continuing with an existing save game or did you start over ? Are you using custom content or mods in your game ?

I updated to Windows 10 from 8.1. I did not play the Sims prior, I just downloaded it for the first time the other day and have yet to even be able to successfully save a character after about 15+ attempts. I do not have any saved games or data for the Sims. I have the 2 expansion packs that came with the game, but have not used them as I have not been able to run the game past creating a sim yet.

What do you have your graphics settings on ? Did you try tuning them down ?

What drivers are you using? I know from experience the 355.82 nVidia drivers do exactly what you are describing on multiple games. The 355.90 work better, Im not sure if they are better than the 355.60 ones so try both.

The following doesnt apply to your issue but another in thread:

With the 8016 error I mentioned above I stand corrected, I set up a dual boot to my old Windows 8.1 drive (OEM so thought this wouldnt work but it did) and ran the game, had the same problem. At this point I shift my focus from Win10 to Skylake.

So I went and checked my BIOS version and there was an update, nothing specific to this issue but I figured Id try it.

This did resolve the issue and I have been able to load into Sims3 fully patched (without EP's Ill try them later) where I couldnt before. So where Gigabyte specifically identified their update fixed this issue Asus did not.

For Asus users you need to go to http://support.asus.com/download/options.aspx?SLanguage=en and put the model of motherboard ie Maximus VIII ranger, select the OS and then expand BIOS. Mine for the above mention board were at 0401 an update to 0801 is there, download it and save it to a USB drive. You then reboot, go into BIOS and use the EZ updater to update the BIOS using the file you just downloaded to USB. When it starts WAIT, do not do anything until you boot into Windows, it may look like your PC is done but it switches off and on a few times when its done it booted up to windows for me (had to restart and re-apply certain BIOS settings). 

Gigabyte have a similar update available http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/download-center.aspx and choose your motherboard etc like the above example. I dont know how their BIOS update works but Im sure theres instruction on their site.

Thanks for all the info.I tried EVERYTHING, and definitely tried lowering graphics (had my geeksquad bf look it over). My computer can handle games like WoW but apparently not the Sims. I was afraid I would be denied a refund if I didnt get it fixed in time, so I no longer have the game. I am definitely looking for a game with less work and troubleshooting, so this was not for me.
