"I don't mind not getting a refund if I can at least get a hard copy"
I bought The Sims 3 University Life and Island Paradise for their sale 3 days ago and it has been nothing but trouble.
I have always purchased the discs but due to the fact that I am abroad at the moment, I opted for the download version. First issue was that it was incompatible with the original disc version on my PC, so I uninstalled everything and downloaded the games. It took 3 days to do this as the downloads kept hanging, restarting, and other nonsense.
After I downloaded the base game through to Late Night, I launched and played without issue. So I proceeded to download and install the rest of the packs. When IP finished, I sat down to have some fun with the new packs only to meet a hard lock black screen for about 4 minutes, then the credits and intro and a load screen.... after about 10 minutes of the bar not moving, I started searching for issues and found a ton!!! Unfortunately too late. I would not have spent money on a product that does not work and is known to have serious issues.
Bottom line is, I don't mind not getting a refund if I can at least get a hard copy of the game mailed to me. I just want to be able to play my game that I spent money for. Is that too much to ask?!

If it's properly installed, it shouldn't matter if you have the download or disc version. The content is the same.
Try the factory reset described in this post: http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-3/FAQ-Troubleshooting-Steps/td-p/714/
If you don't want troubleshooting steps but try to get the disc or a refund, you need to contact a Customer Support game advisor for this
Game advisors can be found through live chat.
