New Laptop Help

★ Novice

Hello Sim experts,

I'm just another person looking for a good laptop to run Sims 4 on. I live in the UK and I have a budget of £1,500 (but anything under that would be great).

I'm terrible when it comes to laptop specs but it looks like I need the following?:

16 GB RAM
256 GB SSD
1 TB SSHD
i7 processor??

I've been looking on the Curry's website at the following laptops:
ACER Predator Helios 300 17.3” Intel® Core™ i7 RTX 2060 Gaming Laptop - 1 TB HDD & 256 GB SSD

MSI Raider GE75 17.3" Intel® Core™ i7 RTX 2060 Gaming Laptop - 1 TB HDD & 256 GB SSD

I'm aware that I could probably get similar laptops at a cheaper price elsewhere and that's why I need some help! I would prefer to be able to buy the laptop in person from a shop like Currys, but I'm willing to buy from Amazon if I can get a good laptop at a better price.

Sims 4 is the only game I'd like to play (with all the expansions included) but I also want to be able to multitask with multiple tabs open and Spotify running in the background.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: New Laptop Help

@RosalynSim21  The specs in the laptops you've found are definitely overkill for Sims 4.  Even an Nvidia 1660 ti is more power than the game could ever use, and if you're not planning to install a massive amount of data (photos, music library, movies, that kind of thing) as well, you'd be more than fine with a single 512 GB solid state drive.  16 GB RAM is definitely a plus, but it's also not necessary to buy a computer with that much memory pre-installed—you could easily take it to a shop and get a second RAM stick added.  You don't need an i7 processor either; the newer Intel i5s that don't have a U in their product name are more than strong enough for Sims 4.

At any rate, I found a few good options that are much cheaper than the ones you've been considering.  Laptops with a 1660 ti start at £900 on Amazon UK.  This Asus has an AMD Ryzen processor that's marginally slower than an Intel i5-9300H but still more than fast enough for TS4.  The version with 8 GB RAM is in stock; the version with 16 GB (£950) looks like it's back ordered, but you could buy the 8 GB version and get a RAM upgrade at a local shop.

Again, a 2060 is definitely overkill for Sims 4, but you could get one for £1000, with 16 GB RAM:

If you'd prefer an Intel processor, this one, with a 1660 ti, is also £1000:

If you really would prefer to buy at Currys, I'd avoid the cheapest models with a 1660 ti, since they only have a small 128 GB solid state drive, along with a much larger mechanical drive (HDD) for data storage.  It's not that the setup wouldn't work, but you'd have to install almost everything on the slow HDD, and some apps, although not TS4, would run much more slowly.

There is one excellent option to consider from Currys though.  This MSI laptop is £1100, with a 1660 ti and a much stronger processor than the others listed.  It does only have 8 GB RAM, but the store should be able to upgrade that to 16 GB in a few minutes.  (You can always call and ask too.)  MSI makes great gaming laptops.

The same specs in an HP would be £50 cheaper on Amazon, although HP doesn't have the same reputation in the gaming industry as MSI.

This is super helpful! Thank you so much for these recommendations. I'm going to have a quick think about it and buy one of the laptops you mentioned. Standard smile
