Lag when clicking on sim or computer [ Edited ]

Just as the title states, all of a sudden when I click on another sim, my sim or the computer there is about a 5-10 second delay before the menu pops up. Been playing over a year on same computer and never had any problems. Removed all CC and mods, which brought lag down slightly, maybe at 5-7 seconds. Did factory reset, brought lag to about 3 seconds. Uninstalled and reinstalled all EPs and game, and lag is about 2 seconds now. Never had any lag before, menu always popped up immediately. The game freezes when clicking on another sim or computer before menu pops up. I used to play in windows mode with 8-10 more programs running and never a problem until a few weeks ago.

@magiconearth The Intel I3 is the weakest of the Intel I series. The Intel 4400 has 64Mb of dedicated video memory and the minimum requirement is 128Mb of video memory. This is what is causing the problem. There is an empty PCIe video slot and installing a video card would probably help the issue. As the Intel 4400 video chip doesn't have any real dedicated memory, I'm guessing the lag is caused by the main memory being swapped in and out of virtual memory. Installing a dedicated video card  would help the situation.

@roberta591 Thank you for your suggestion. I have no idea about dedicated memory. Can you recommend any dedicated memory card I can purchase? I played on this computer for almost a year and this never happened prior. Not sure why all of a sudden this would happen.

If you get a video card there will be dedicated video memory on the card. The video card with it's own memory should help the game performance.

@magiconearth  To recommend a specific card is tough. A mid range gaming card will run about $150 USD. Depending on the card you may have to upgrade the power supply at the same time. To play the Sims 3 and Sims 4 should be good with a mid range card. If you think you may play more demanding games like Fallout 4 you'll probably want a more powerful card. Your computer is not really that powerful so yolu may want to get a mid range video card. Much of the decision probably will depend on the budget. Any card less then $100 USD will probably be entry level or an old model. Take a look at a Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti will run about $160 USD and you'll have to upgrade the power supply. Your power supply is only 290 Watts and you can probably upgrade to a 500 Watts for about $50 USD. The two main manufacturers are Nvidia and ATI (ATI is owned by AMD) and choice is mostly a personal preference. Once you make a choice it is just a matter of how powerful a card you want and that will determine the cost. Then check to see how much power it reequires and that will tell you the power supply required. Most mid range cards will require 300 Watts or more and the price difference is not that great so to get a 300 Watt for $40 you can get a 550 Watt for $50. I use Newegg or Amazon or Microcenter. I have a Mircocenter about 30 minutes away so if I need it now I just jump in the car. You have to do a little homework.

@roberta591 Found that the issue with the lag came from some custom content I installed at some point. Took out a bunch of custom content and now there is no lag whatsoever. Understanding Intel graphics may not be the best but they do work for Sims 3. I've been playing on this computer for almost 2 years and another computer with Intel graphics for over 6 years with never any issues with graphics or lag until I downloaded either too much custom content or bad cc.

Hey, I know this topic is super old, but do you know what CC caused the problem because my game lags too when I click on my Sim. I have a 1060 so I doubt that my GPU is the problem.

@Kayman04  There's no way to tell which cc is causing your issues.  There's so much third-party content out there, and a lot of it is bad.  Sometimes the cc is well made but takes more resources to render than you'd expect; high poly count hairs are a great example, as they can cause problems on lower-end cards.  So you'll just have to test all of your content and get rid of any pieces that cause lag.  You can pull your existing TS3 game folder out of Documents, launch the game to spawn a new one, and then start adding your cc into the new folder in batches and testing it out in a new game.

By the way, I hope you've capped the frame rates on that powerful graphics card that you have.  TS3 has no built-in fps limiter, so a 1060 will throw rates well into the hundreds if you don't take care of it yourself.  This can also cause in-game lag, but more importantly, your card could damage itself by working that hard.
