I have just bought sims 3 through the online shop using paypal...
I got a confirmation email from Origin with a serial key
I logged into the sims 3 page and went to register game and it says
INVALID KEY...
now ive spent an hour trying to find how to contact someone to help!

Did you try downloading the game via Origin at all ? The download version is downloaded through Origin and not the Sims 3 site.
Here's how to contact Customer Support.

You have the option to contact them by mail, phone or Live Chat. For Live Chat, make sure to choose US as your country.

Please try the following steps using the Mozilla Firefox to register the game:
» To register the game please visit http://www.thesims3.com/mypage/.
» Next login with your email address and password.
» Click on the register a new game link found on this page.
» Enter in your code and you will be registered and able to access all the online features on Sims 3 again.
If you are still unable to register your game, please contact EA support.
