@roberta591 my hardware is out of date? i didnt even know, nor do i really know how to tell lol... guess thats why i always resort to these types of forums, people out there know these types of things so much better than i ever could. here is my dxdiag (hopefully this is what you needed) please let me know what you find out & if theres something i can do to be as up to date as possible,

@aly975 The minimum requirement for this game is 128Mb of dedicated video memory. Your dxdiag says there is 0 dedicated memory as you have the integrated Intel 4600 video chip. Integrated video chips do not have true dedicated video memory. All the video memory is borrowed from main memory. While your game may run on your computer, the game may quit working at any time for no apparent reason. Many players have reported issues with Intel integrated video chips. Intel does have newer drivers for the 4600 on their support site. This may fix the issues but as your computer is below spec you may continue to have issues.

@jpkarlsen Well the man at Microsoft who was in charge of Windows, Steven Sinofsky has left the company, effective immediately . Sinofsky was in line for ceo why would he just up and quit. The board was directors were not happy with Sinofsky. Windows 8 was a big disaster for Microsoft. Both Ballmer and Sinofsky received less then their full bonus. There was a Windows 10 give away for anyone who had Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and was available for some time (someone told me you still can get the digital upgrade but I can not confirm this). Probably the biggest reason upgrade to Windows 10 is DX12 and support for new hardware.

@roberta591 But i run the sims 4 using the nvidia geforce gt 740m that is also in my laptop...so does that intel video card problem still matter although i am not using that card to run the game?? Also, what causes it to be 0 is there something i can do that adds some memory back?? Ill still check out the website for updates for the driver, but i do think last time i checked it said it was up to date.

Yes Sinofsky left Microsoft in 2012 as a result of a power struggle between him and Steve Ballmer. He resigned mid november and left effective december 31.
There was a way to get Windows 10 for free after the offer officially ended. It was because one version (academic I think) was exempt from that. It was easy to make it seem like your Windows version was that version so in effect anyone that researched it a bit could still upgrade for free. It is some time ago I heard that this also ended.

@aly975 The 740M is not being discovered by dxdiag which means the system does see it. Probably a driver issue. Did you look for the GT 740M driver? Zero is the true amount of dedicated video memory. That is the design of the motherboard and can not be changed (it would require a different motherboard and cost would probably exceed the worth of the laptop). Sometimes you can change that value in the bios but that is just a figure presented to programs that require that information and does not give you any real dedicated video memory. There are 2 versions 0f the GT 740 - model GK107 and GK208 and is a DX11 chip - it will not support Windows 10 DX12. The GK208 performs better then the GK107. I'm guessing if you get the right driver and configure the 740 for the game (the driver switches the 740 in and out) in the driver you should be able to run the game at medium settings. Make sure you have the correct driver as the desktop driver version will not switch the 740 in and out. Once you get the driver right and the chip still does not appear in the dxdiag, it is possible the 740 chip is defective and to repair is replacement of the motherboard. The last one I bought from HP for a model DV7 (I think) was over $400 and insurance paid for it otherwise it would have been a new computer. HP used the same designation for different models so it may be possible to only have a Intel video chip (which is part of the cpu chip). If dxdiag can't see the chip and you are SURE your computer has it - there is only one way to be sure and that is to take the computer apart and see. If the chip is there and you still can't get it to work my guess it is defective. I have had more then one conversation with HP engineers about this issue and the fact they won't warranty a motherboard that has been replaced when the laptop was 6 months old and they go by the original purchase date when the replacement goes bad. HP makes a pretty good printer that is delivered with drivers that don't work. I now have a Samsung laser printer and a Dell laptop (hint - hint).

@roberta591 so if im understanding correctly, my computer isnt seeing that there is a gt 740m in it?? im sure its there because i can access the nvidia control panel and go into program settings and set sims 4 to use the gt740m... but i guess it is saying it is using it but its actually not?
Is there somewhere i can see what version i have either the GK107 or GK208? is there also a way to check what driver i have either the desktop version or one for a laptop because for that, im not sure i just went to the nvidia website and just updated to whatever they said was the latest one.

@aly975 Google gpuz and download this utility. It will tell you everything you want to know about your graphics processors and more. Your system should detect the 740 and display information about it. The easiest thing to do is go to Nvidia drivers (google it - google is your friend) look up GeForce GT 740M and download the driver and run the download (double click it) to install it - M stands for the mobile version which is what you need. The driver with the M is for desktops and it assumes you only have one graphics processor and does not have switchable capabilities that you need for your laptop.

@roberta591 i did the auto detect your gpu on the nvidia website and it came up as the gt 740m and then i downloaded the driver for that, so it should be the correct one if it wasnt already, i also downloaded the gpu-z and this is the info on it http://gpuz.techpowerup.com/18/09/04/j7w.png
