Game crashes on save (if played for a while)

[ Edited ]
★★★★ Guide

The whole story in one place as parts are now in many posts in different threads on http://forums.thesims.com

Since the day game was released I've played it. On Ultra. With no problems at all.
This includes playing the game for about a week after the update 10/1/2014. It worked without a glitch, at least I didn't notice anything.

About 10 days ago, the game started to crash on save. First it was happening after an hour of playing.
Then it started to happen if I tried to save only after 30 mins. Then it became shorter and was happening after just 15 minutes of playing. Finally it started to happen if I was playing the game just a minute then tried to save it.

I've tried everything I could think of.
Repair the game, emptying game cache, clean sims' inventories, clean house inventory, forcing Origin into offline mode, deleting my sims, deleting Maxis' townies, then those in houses, buldozing lot, name it. Nothing helped. Nothing.

What helped temporarily was moving the family to a smaller lot (just one family, other sims I've deleted completely and now I'm sorry I did it).
But crashes came back after a day.
Currently I can play the game for a while only if graphics is set on "low" preset. But I'm already experiencing crashes on save after a few hours, and soon it'll shorten I won't be able to play my game any more.

Backupped save. Copied it on my laptop (where I'm not playing games and now I have to reinstall it as I don't want a trace of Origin client on it!).
The same thing, crash on save, is happening in there too.
Which means two things:
- either the game code sux, or
- both my laptop AND my desktop PC are broken

Sorry, I don't think both my laptop and my deskop PC got the same hardware fault at the same time. Especially when everything else except Sims 4 work flawlessly.

.

To show anyone who reads this, that'll be a soul who wants to help, or people who got the same issue as I did (and I expect more and more people suffer from this issue), I took pics what is happening in my RAM during Sims 4.

This is how it looks when Sims 4 isn't running:

Sims 4 started:
http://s9.postimg.org/rxdmg3agf/test2.jpg

Game loaded, do you notice it's still pretty normal? It is and I can still save my game there, as long as I'm not playing it.
http://s10.postimg.org/ssxu5amvd/test3.jpg

Playing the game, see how memory usage raises like crazy? And I'm practically not doing anything. The game is just running by itself, I'm not clicking:

http://s27.postimg.org/p0cwlfztv/test5.jpg

Okay, a minute passed. Let's save the game. Oops!

http://s30.postimg.org/ae4spewtt/test7.jpg

This is the worst example of coding I've ever seen in my life. Many games have memory leaks, but this scale of memory leak, honestly, I haven't seen anywhere else. Corrupted save, one will say. Well, if it was a save that is corrupted, the game wouldn't load it at all, am I correct?
How is this even possible is beyond my understanding. I don't know what causes it, but it's nothing I did myself.

In case you think it might be some mod doing this... It's not. Remember, I tried the same save on my laptop too. There were never any mods installed on it! Just a clean game and from scratch - as I don't play games on the laptop and I don't want games DRM clients like uplay, steam and origin installed on it at all.

Of course, with every crash on save, there is an entry in the event log. Here's just one of almost hundred of them if not more as an example:

.

I guess some people will want to see what "poor"machine I'm using here.
I mean... Sims 4 can't run without a glitch on a PC? What a blasphemic statement!
Cmon, you need just a toaster to run the game on it, it must be some ancient 10 years old junk when it breaks just after a minute of play.

This is my machine, desktop PC, that breaks down on saving the game if I play my game more than one minute on it:

Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.140303-2144)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4670K CPU @ 3.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760

Full dxdiag: http://pastebin.com/sJabcptd

Won't post laptop specs as I really don't think it's relevant here. I can if someone explains how that'll help.
.

Is there a solution?
Oh actually there is!

I can upload my sims in the gallery, delete all saves, start a new game, import my sims from gallery and weeeeeee, it works.
Yea, I've tried if a new game on laptop will work... It works FLAWLESSLY. Saves flawlessly. Loads flawlessly. Whatever, flawlessly. But it's not my game. I want *my* game.

And what is my game? My game is this one where I've earned, without messing around and cheating, almost all achievements.
The new game doesn't have those achievements. I don't want to play a new game, get all unlocks, achievements and the rest of stuff again - just to get to the same point where I can't play it any more because it also started to crash on save.
If memory leak bug can't be fixed, can we at least get achievements per user and not per save dealt with soon, please?

Re: Game crashes on save (if played for a while)

★★ Guide

Here are a few things that you can try:

  • Uninstalling and reinstalling Origin (Your games will still be installed and all that)

  • Uninstalling and reinstalling the Sims 4 (Your saves will still be there)

  • Repairing the Sims 4 via Origin (Right-click the Sims 4 in your game library and click "Repair Game")

  • Clear the Sims 4 cache

  • Clear Origin's cache

Colton, next time please BEFORE you post that, read what's written. Please.

I'VE TRIED EVERYTHING.

Now if you don't have something I didn't try, please, don't post things I've tried.

Especially don't post things that have no effect on the matter as obviously the issue is replicated on TWO DIFFERENT MACHINES.

I'm aware you're just trying to help, and thank you for that, but that doesn't help.

100Mb, a few bytes more give or take.

That's a lot. The game I've played from the beginning is like 7 MB.

You probably suffer from the Savegame bloating issue. EA is looking into that. Could you upload your save game somewhere so I can try to forward it to EA ?

Yes absolutely.

The most recent one in it's format (Slot_00000001.save) can be downloaded from here:

https://app.box.com/s/d1y4yrx9vmhtg0aizrkv

I've also 7zipped into saves.zip file all three saveslots I use(d) that include all 5 versions of a save although saves 2 and 3 could be misleading as I didn't save them sequentially but when I reached some achievement I'd delete a save and make another with "save as", unless of course a date and timestamp for each is inside files.

The complete saves.zip that contains all 15 savefiles is here:

https://app.box.com/s/ge8ik1toc37fz4v9djg8

If you'll test them yourself, I suggest leaving gfx options on ultra so it definetly crashes on save after just a minute of playing the game. Lower gfx setup will allow you more time to play till the crash occurs.

If box.com is not good enough cloud service for EA, I can upload saves on any other service too, just name it. Wink

Thanks.

There probably won't be any feedback from EA but I see if I can forward it to them.

It will certainly be helpful. Thanks

Thanks in advance, I'll try to give some nudge on Maxis too because... I can't play my game anymore for days now. Frown

I'm having the same exact problem. And I'm not the only one. A few days ago it got to the point that every single time I tried to save, the game crashed, meaning absolutely no game progress could be made at all. Great computer, no mods, etc. I will send you my game file too if you tell me how.

I've been playing the same game file since The Sims 4 was realeased, a little over 380 hours now.

Now I run ccleaner, malwarebytes, and update and repair The Sims 4 via Origin, and shut down my computer before and after I play. That has made it so that I can play the game now and save ONCE. If I try to save a second time without turning it off and back on, then it crashes every time.

I've also deleted a lot from my sims' inventories and continue to do so, but I will not delete everything. That defeats the point of playing the game.

This problem is still absolutely infuriating, and it's nothing new to The Sims. Right before The Sims 4 came out, my Sims 3 game was taking no shorter than 55 minutes to load each time.

I don't play multiple games, just one.

I'm also now playing on the LOWEST gfx settings so that I can play the game at all.
