[FAQ] How to keep your account safe

Hi everyone

Recently a user in the NHL boards posted a message warning everyone about scam messages. A Community Manager (eafrancois) responded and what has been gathered below is a summary of the basics of keeping your account safe.

Just for everyone's information, no one other than the EA personnel have access to your account. Heros are simply users just like you but with modding powers. We cannot see your personal information.

Unless a source is given, all of this information has been taken from the official EA help articleIt is quite long, but we would like to encourage you to give it a full read when you got some time available.

Passwords:

EA has recently (9/20/2013) increased the password requirements. Passwords containing parts of your email address are no longer allowed.

Passwords should not be information that other people can easily learn like your birthdate, your gaming username and real name, etc.

Most people think it's obvious not to use simple passwords but most still do. The most commonly used as reported by SplashData were:

  1. password
  2. 123456
  3. 12345678
  4. abc123
  5. qwerty
  6. monkey
  7. letmein
  8. dragon
  9. 111111
  10. baseball
  11. iloveyou
  12. trustno1

How to keep your password strong:

  • Have at least 8 characters in your password and a good mix of numbers, lowercase letters and uppercase letters, for example: AgaPanTha546.
  • Use different passwords for different accounts (for example: your EA account, email, console login) - if one account is compromised, the rest of them will be in danger.
  • Change your passwords regularly

Resetting your password:

If you would like to reset your password for your EA account, use this page

Always remember: EA/Heros/Helpers will/should never ask for your password!!

If you get a message asking for personal info - REPORT IT!!

Websites and Viruses:

Viruses/Malware can get onto your computer/laptop without you even knowing.

  • Having a well-known anti-virus scanner such as  Microsoft Security Essentials on your computer is a practically vital neccesity.
  • Make sure your computer and software is up to date
  • Don't click on links to websites you don't recognise even if they come from a reputable source
  • Don't go onto cheat/illegal sites or sites that promise bonuses (often those which sound too good to be true are the ones) - they may put viruses on your computer or steal account information by asking you to login.

Be on the Lookout!

  • Check the authenticity behind everything asking for personal or account information
  • Make sure the email you are responding to is not a scam EVEN IF it says it is from EA
  • Do not post personal information online

What to do if you think your account has been compromised :

  • Change your password straight away
  • Contact Customer Support and supply all the information you can
