my sims game keeps freezing on create a sim [ Edited ]

i just bought the sims 4 + cats and dogs expansion pack. when i open the game, it runs smoothly for a while until i start customizing my sim, then it freezes and i have to manually shut down my computer. this has happened every time i’ve opened the game and it doesn’t even save my progress. is there anything i can do to fix this?
