Yes, it has to as that is the only place the game will look for your user data.

@heyysydd

What error? You have to carefully read the instructions and really make sure you're following the instructions properly.

@armaniallthat

The packs are in the Sims 4 Packs folder which needs to be in the same location as the base game.

@armaniallthat

If you are uninstalling the game the Sims 4 Packs folder will also be uninstalled. When you reinstall the game, to whichever location you have chosen in Origin, the Sims 4 Packs folder will be recreated in that location, same as the base game.

sims 4 packs folder on external drive

★★★★ Novice

I have all 60 dlc and it takes up the rest of my laptops storage so I put game and game packs folder onto the usb but it was taking literal hours to load so I tried moving both the game and packs folder back but my laptop is saying it only has enough space for one. so im wondering if there's a way to create a symlink for the packs folder so that ill be able to play the game and use all the dlc while having the packs folder on an external drive

Re: sims 4 packs folder on external drive

@armaniallthat

No there isn't. As explained in your previous thread that your new post has been merged into, the base game and packs need to be in the same location.

If the game took literally hours to load this is a problem with your Mac/external drive/connection or a problem with your user data Sims 4 folder, maybe too many mods.

Re: how can I transfer sims 4 from my macbook to an external hard drive?

Hi, I read your page on how to transfer my mods to a USB with the symlink, but The Sims recently updated and I went from 16gb of space to less than 4gb. I'm not sure if this is just from the game's new update taking up a ton of space, but I'm trying to move my game to the USB. I went into Origin settings > installs and saves > game library location, but I can't seem to select my USB as the location, like there's no option to select it. Would you know what I'm doing wrong? Thank you so much!!!!
