'Unknown Error' prevents me from playing TS3 on Mac

★★★ Newbie

Hello,

I've just downloaded the Sims 3 from Origin and really wanted to play on my mac. However, whenever I try to open the game, a dialogue window appears saying there is an 'Unknown Error'. The game doesn't open at all. I don't understand what is going on.... Now I've tried un-installing and re-installing the game but it still doesn't work.

Here are the specifications of my mac:

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)

Processor 2,5 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB

I'm running it on Mojve 10.14.3, the newest version I believe.

Can someone please help me out?

@femmerss  The unknown error messages are to be expected when installing certain packs—Ambitions, Late Night, Fast Lane, and Outdoor Living don't install correctly in the most recent versions of mac OS.  The issues are entirely fixable, though.  By the way, thanks for sharing your specs; they confirm that you can skip the most complicated fix, as your graphics card is supported.

But first, since you've already uninstalled and reinstalled at least once, it's best to start with a clean uninstall.  The game's uninstaller will miss some of the hidden library files, and not removing them can prevent you from launching the game going forward, even if you do everything else right.

Next, download and install the base game only, and run the Super Patch (digital download version) to manually patch the game to 1.67.  The launcher doesn't do a good job of patching on its own, and running the Super Patch won't hurt.

When installing the four problem packs, you'll need to apply two workarounds.  The first is easy—create an alias for each pack tha doesn't already have one in Applications, alongside the alias for the base game.

The other fix is to copy files from those packs into the folder for your newest pack by the date EA released it.  The files are supposed to get copied automatically, but that doesn't happen.  The video embedded in this post shows you exactly how to do it:

If you have any questions, or get stuck on one of the steps, don't hesitate to ask.  If so, it would be helpful if you could list the packs you're installing so I can give more specific instructions.

Edit:  I've moved your thread to the dedicated Sims/mac section.  Please let me know if you need any more help.
